The Weber Genesis 1000 is a workhorse of a grill. The 1000-5000 series was the second styling of the Genesis grills and were the last Genesis grills to require 13 Flavorizer bars. The primary parts for the Weber Genesis 1000 (as well as the 2000-5000 grills) are still readily available.
If you are doing a rehab then here are the parts you are probably going to need:
Weber Genesis 1000 Parts
You should be able to get everything you need for under $200. It is not typical to have to replace everything at once so you probably wont need all of these parts.
Here are a few forum threads where folks share the details of their Genesis 1000 restoration projects. You can browse through them for inspiration and ideas on how to fix busted up side tables.
Before you invest in replacement parts make sure you check the condition of the frame and the corrosion on the fire box slider rails. These are the two weakest points on the Weber Genesis 1000. If the frame on your grill is not stable I have a few ideas on how to fix that in this post.
Here is a picture of what you need to look for when you inspect the firebox slider rails.
If your firebox slider rails are falling apart then you will need to call Weber (1-800-446-1071) to get new ones. The rails are cheap..about five dollars…BUT…installing them is a MAJOR PAIN IN THE BUTT!
The screws that hold the slider rails do NOT want to come out. When I was dealing with this I had to get a buddy to grind the screws off then drill them out. If you think a little WD-40 will do the trick then you are in for a rude surprise.
Another problem area for the 1000 series is finding replacement slats for the side tables and handle. I have given up on finding a supply of side table assemblies. Most folks end up cutting their own wooden slats from oak or redwood and they actually look pretty nice!
It is always a tough call on whether to rebuild on of these classic grills or bite the bullet and buy a new one. If you are going to have to do a full rebuild on your Genesis then the cost will be about the same as a brand new Weber Q 3200 which is a sweet little grill.
Let me make a quick pitch for you to restore an old Genesis 1000 instead of taking it to the curb. I really think the 1000 series is a better grill than the current Genesis 300 series grill. I can promise you they grill better than the current Spirit grills!
The thirteen Flavorizer bars on the Genesis 1000 are the heart of this grill and are complete overkill. In later model grills Weber designers said, “You know, we can probably get away with just using five Flavorizer bars.” They were right, you can “get away” with using fewer bars but the performance is NOT the same. More Flavorizer bars means better heat distribution and fewer flare-ups.
Whatever you decide to do just remember to have fun and keep grilling!!
